China issues safety warning for imported Renault Megane

By Joanne Jiu  From:Gasgoo.comApril 02, 2008

Shanghai, April 2 (Gasgoo.com)  About 5,000 Renault Megane II owners in China are put at risk by the car's potential safety problems, warned China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) in a filing yesterday.

Renault began to recall its Magane II and Clio III vehicles in the European markets in October 2006, but the French automaker has not yet released a statement on the defects, the Chinese government watchdog said in a filing posted on its official website. Around 5,000 Renault Megane II vehicles have been sold in the Chinese market by now.

Also, the automaker is required to make a risk evaluation of the faulty part in the imported Renault Megane II cars and take effective measures to ensure the consumers' safety together with a statement.

GAQSIQ warned that inspection of all the imported Renault cars in China will be intensified from now on. It's not clear when the warning will be lifted.

Back in February this year, Renault issued a notice to its Chinese buyers, offering them a free check-up and a replacement if the magnetic valve in the transmission was faulty.

The Magane II was introduced to China in 2005. The current price is around RMB 198,000 ($28,180).
